Ryan is an active marching arts instructor, visual designer, consultant and clinician, having worked with more than thirty-five competitive ensembles in California, Colorado and Hawaii, across all divisions of pageantry. His groups have earned high visual performance awards, and titles at the class, circuit and state levels. Through these experiences, he has been fortunate to work with, and learn from, some of the brightest minds in the activity.
As an adjudicator, Ryan has served as a chief judge, lead visual caption judge and is regularly assigned to circuit, regional, state and national championship event panels across the country. He has judged marching bands, color guards, indoor percussion & indoor winds units in over 25 states for more than 35 circuits/organizations. He is an active visual judge for Bands of America (BOA) and Winter Guard International (WGI), in the percussion division.
He has had many ties with the Sacramento Mandarins organization, as an alumnus, visual instructor, former indoor winds drill designer/choreographer, former percussion academy director and former program director for the Mandarins Music Academy, which serves instrumental music classes to over one thousand students at more than forty elementary schools in Northern California. Ryan has served on the visual and movement staff for the Mandarins Drum & Bugle Corps since 2021.
Ryan has also studied movement and performance with multiple dance studios and musical theatre companies. He continues to attend local dance classes in his spare time. Other affiliations include being a past guest on the Marching Roundtable Podcast, featured in Halftime Magazine and is a part of the Winter Leadership Team for the Northern California Band Association, from whom he recently received the NCBA Elsie Nielson Service Award for outstanding service to music education. In addition, he was on staff for the marching programs at California State University, Sacramento, and was a regular guest lecturer for the marching band methods course, teaching music education majors visual design fundamentals and how to use Pyware. Ryan holds an associate’s, a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Business Administration, with a minor in Music. He currently lives in Sacramento with his wife Kourtney and dogs: Stuart, Bindi and Tibi.
