Sy Miyasato

Year:

2023

Sy Miyasato was a dedicated parent and supporter of the Mandarins beginning in 2009, and his contributions were extensive. Sy helped to keep the warehouse organized and assisted with equipment sales each year. Beyond organizing the instruments, he went so far as to set up a repair shop in his own garage, where he spent untold hours cleaning and repairing instruments, recording serial numbers, and delivering and organizing instruments for both the Mandarins drum corps and music academy. With Jerry Sackett, Sy maintained the corpsโ€™ trucks and trailers, ensuring that they were safe to drive โ€” which he actually did himself on many occasions โ€” to and from camps, performances, throughout summer tours, and for the Music Academy. Sy also worked as a co-chair of the DCI Capital Classic along with Mark MacRae from the inaugural event to 2019. Additionally, Sy helped with souvenir sales, prop building, and kitchen duties. Sy and his wife Susan also opened their home to members in need of housing every year. Sadly, we lost Sy in 2020. We miss him dearly and honor his memory with his induction to the Hall of Fame.
